Sweetest victory for 'Odisha Rasagola'
Recently, Odisha received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for its famed rasagola from the Chennai-based Geographical Indications Registry (GIR). The GI tag is a name or sign given on products originating in specific geographical location. This tag clearly distinguishes the sweet made in the state from its counterpart in West Bengal - the 'Banglar Rosogolla'. 'Odisha Rasagola' is made of cottage cheese (or locally known as chhena) cooked in sugar syrup, which is soft to feel, juicy and non-chewy in consistency, has been offered to Lord Jagannath as part of bhog since centuries. The mention of the rasagola can be found in the 'Dandi Ramayan', an Odia adaptation of Valmiki Ramayan written in the 15th century.
